Frequently Asked Questions

Where do your campers come from?
Campers at Emerson represent over 30 states and 15 countries. The majority of Emerson campers come from the northeast, especially the Greater Boston Area, Southern Connecticut, Westchester County, New York City, and New Jersey.
What are the ages of your campers?
Our campers are ages 7 – 15. New campers join Emerson at every age.
How are the bunks assigned?
Campers are placed in bunks based on the grade they have just completed. We also consider each camper’s interests, personality, and years at camp when creating bunks. Each bunk has approximately 10 campers and 2 to 3 counselors. Campers have the ability to request a bunkmate when they enroll.
How do campers select their activities?
Campers love our elective model! Campers fill out their Activity Preference Form before they arrive and receive their schedules on the first day of camp. After trying all of their electives campers have the ability to switch one activity.
Do you offer transportation to camp?
We offer bus service to and from camp from White Plains, New York and Newton, Massachusetts. There is an additional cost for this service.
Can I extend my child's stay at camp once they arrive?
Of course! Campers have the option of extending for an additional session once they arrive. If space permits we are happy to accommodate.
How does communication work when my child is at camp?
You’ll be set up with an account to send emails as often as you want to your child. This is a free service. One-way emails can be set up for parents, extended family and friends. Campers are encouraged to write home weekly. Both emails and regular mail are distributed during rest hour.

Multisession campers can schedule a phone call home between each session. There are no phone calls during a two-week session. Families are encouraged to call or email our main office while camp is in session. Our Director and Leadership Team are easily available by phone and email during the summer.

Additionally, while camp is in session we send regular updates. We want families to be familiar with what happens at camp so they best understand their child’s experience and be able to connect with them about camp when they return home.

Tell me about laundry.
Laundry is done once in the middle of the session for two-week campers. Campers who attend multiple sessions also have their laundry serviced between sessions. Laundry is included in the cost of tuition.
What if my child gets sick or injured while at camp?
We are fortunate to have amazing medical staff at Camp Emerson who care for campers. Most of our medical team are returning staff who love camp, and many are camp parents. We have multiple nurses on staff and our Medical Director is a board certified physician. Our medical team communicates regularly with families and is easy to reach while camp is in session. Every summer the feedback we receive from our families about our medical team is extremely positive.

Most illnesses are treated at camp. The nearest urgent care is 12 minutes away from camp. We are also 15 minutes away from Berkshire Medical Center, our local hospital.

My child takes medication. How does that work?
Our medical staff dispense medications at each meal and before bed. All medications, both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC), are kept in the health center. Many campers take medications at camp. The dispensing of medication is a quick process and a routine part of the day.
How do you select your counselors?
Many of our counselors are returning staff members who were campers at Emerson. New staff go through a rigorous hiring process. In addition to interviews, we check three references for every staff member and complete multiple background checks. All staff must have prior experience working with children. After hiring, all staff attend a pre-camp orientation in addition to on-site training once they arrive at camp.
